Best Affordable Products for Natural Hair Under $15

Disclaimer: There are NO affiliate links in this post. I will always disclose when I use affiliate links.

Ladies and gentleman, I am a product junkie. I cannot be left alone in a Target and I am not even allowed to step foot into an Ulta. Online shopping is not as bad for me, but in person shopping gets me every time!

Sometimes I cannot resist picking up a product that is on sale but my main weapon against overspending is buying drugstore and affordable products. I wanted to share some of my all time favorite affordable products. You can walk into Target and be like yeeeeeehaw – I am spending $50 instead of $250 on products! Or just avoid Target all together and save your coins.

My first and newest favorite affordable product is the Design Essentials Curl Enhancing Mousse. I can’t get enough of this stuff! At only $10.99, it gives the best hold, definition and shine out of any mousse that I have ever tried. It is great for 2nd day hair and braid outs. I am bummed because I am actually running out of it and I have to buy more. The good news is that it won’t break the bank once I restock!

Design Essentials Curl Enhancing Mousse: $10.99
https://www.jcpenney.com/p/design-essentials-natural-curl-enhancing-mousse-75-oz/

One the cheapest and most effective products is the Cantu Coconut Curling Creme. You guys, this product is only $5.99!! I am in awe of how moisturized and defined this creme makes my hair. You can just casually slip this into your cart and barely even notice it on your bill. It also smells like delicious coconut, so you really can’t go wrong here.

Cantu Coconut Curling Creme: $5.99
https://www.target.com/p/cantu-coconut-curling-cream-12-fl-oz/

This is an OG product. If you have been natural or using curly hair products for over 5 years, you have definitely heard of this stuff. From the tantalizing coconut hibiscus smell to the creamy formula, this product is a budget winner! I have this in like 3 different sizes, so I will NEVER run out. It is a must-have for vacations as well. I use it after conditioning my hair and it serves as 3 products in one while vacationing! Who doesn’t love a good multi-tasker!?

Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie: $7.99
https://www.ulta.com/coconut-hibiscus-curl-enhancing-smoothie?productId=xlsImpprod16681019

Okay, so this one is not exactly a styling product, but it is still a natural hair must-have! Most shampoos make my hair dry and terrible, but this one makes it soft and manageable. I have to say that I hate wash day because my hair is so long and it gets tangled easily during the great wash. I love this stuff because it keeps the moisture in your hair instead of stripping it to the dry nubbins. Plus, who doesn’t love a great shampoo fro under $7!?

Creme of Nature Argan Oil Moisture & Shine Shampoo: $5.99
https://www.target.com/p/cr-232-me-of-nature-174-moisture-shine-shampoo-with-argan-oil-12-fl-oz/-/A-14382912?

Following the theme of the last product, this is actually not technically a styling product, but it is one of my fave bargain finds. This big ol’ tub of slippery conditioner is only $3.99! This is one of my holy grail products for detangling and adding moisture to my dry hair. I love to try new conditioners, but I always end up coming back to this conditioner because of the quality and amazing value.

Tresemme Moisture Rich Conditioner: $3.99
https://www.target.com/p/tresemme-174-moisture-rich-conditioner-28oz/-/A-13074981?

Okay one last item that falls outside of the styling product lines. This is one of my top must-have tools: my bae spray. All jokes aside, if you have curly or natural hair – YOU NEED THIS. This spray bottle delivers an even mist that is way more reliable than a Sally’s bottle or whatever repurposed bottle I used to use. It also can be used to water finicky plants! A win-win, my friend.

Water Spray Mister: $8.99
https://www.amazon.com/Groom-Industries-Solvent-Sprayer-Flairosol/dp/B00D7BJ6MW/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_194_bs_t_1?

The next one is another newish favorite. This is my lovely organic Jojoba oil. I do not understand what took me so long to try this stuff, but I am hooked! It mimics the oil production of your natural hair and smells real nice. It also leaves a very nice sheen and shine on your hair without making it overly oily. It also works great on scaly elbows – so I have heard. I have beautiful and smooth elbows. Okay fine! I use it on my scaly elbows.

Jojoba Oil: $11.99

Gorilla Snot $2.99:
https://www.target.com/p/moco-de-gorila-punk-squizz-hair-gel-11-9oz/-/A-13974383?

Yooooo, this is the only product that can tame thy sacred edges. I have tried so many gels and edge controls and this stuff is just like it sounds – sticky and snotty! For some reason my hair loves it and gives me those FKA Twiggs/Chilli inspired babyhairs. See how I incorporated the young folks and the old folks!? I know pop culture, people.

Well that brings this affordable product roundup to an end! Let me know below if you enjoyed learning about my favorite cheap natural hair care products.

TTYL!

Simone

5 Powerful Life Lessons I Have Learned by 30

Hi loves! I wanted to round up some of the most important life lessons that I have learned by 30. I just turned 30 this June and I am feeling pretty dang good about life. Is everything perfect? Hell to the naw! Do I have 1 milli in cold hard cash? No freaking way. But I do have a beautiful family, supportive friends and a pretty neato passion in blogging. Let’s dive into these life lessons!

Nobody cares. Seriously.

It was such a relief to me when I got the big news – nobody cares! People are focused on their own issues and do not have time to care about yours. This is a huge blessing because when you realize that no one is checking for you, you have the freedom to do whatever you want!

If you want to launch a business, do it! No one will lose any sleep over your decision (except maybe your significant other or family). I am talking about your Facebook friends or IG followers. These people are off living their own lives. Don’t place too much stock in stranger’s opionions and be true to yourself. Others may take a slight interest in whatever moves you are making, but ultimately YOU must care about the life choices you are making.

Reading is fundamental

Consistent reading has always been tough for me. Last year, I decided I wanted to read more and I committed to reading 10 books in a year. This year, I decided to double it and make it to 20. I am SO glad that I have been sticking to it. I have learned sooo much about myself through reading about spirituality, motivation and the occasional frothy fiction novel. Reading is soo necessary for growth and self-discovery. I attribute so much of my progress and acceptance about turning 30 to reading. I think I am on 13 books, so I am over halfway my goal!

Listen to your intuition

We all have an inner voice that tells us what we should be doing. Sometimes it is buried under layers of self-doubt and outside influences, but if you listen real hard – you can hear it.

I learned that it is best to trust and listen to that voice because 90% of the time it is on point. Especially if you get weird vibes from a person and you can’t explain it. That is is your intuition talking, you need to listen to it! Ever have that deep gut feeling? Yup – that is your intuition calling! You better answer it.

Your path will not always be a straight line.

Yooooo, I wish someone had explained this to me early. I had a wonky path in life and did not take the socially acceptable route. I skipped 4 year college and went to community college. It took me 6 looonnggg years to figure out the direction I wanted to go in life and what I wanted to do in terms of school. At 23, I decided to apply to University of Washington and the rest was smoothish sailing.

I FIRMLY believe that if I had gone away to school at 18, I would have failed out. I did not have any life skills and I would have done terribly in school. I worked in retail, restaurants and other service-related jobs and gained a ton of life experience and perspective. I was able to use all those crazy times to help me narrow my focus and cultivate what you really want.

Now, I am trying to figure out my next step, but it is NOT a straight line. Do not beat yourself up if you life is not the typical path that the collective society expects from you. You need to learn along the way, girl!

Be confident in yourself and the things you like.

Just own your quirks. If you like something that is deemed “lame” or silly, don’t be ashamed. I love a lot of “dorky” stuff like medieval fiction, the Backstreet Boys and acoustic piano covers. I used to be so ashamed when someone discovered my eclectic taste in music or books. Now, I wear it as a badge of honor. You’re a trekkie? Sweet! Love Young Adult novels? Awesome! I learned that you may be surprised who has the same secret obsessions. You never know who you can connect with by sharing your love of 80’s hair bands or fanny packs (which are actually in style now!).

Blogging is still wayyyy out of my comfort zone and honestly, I still have not shared this blog with my extended circle of friends (aka Facebook). I still struggle with finding the confidence to bare my soul and put myself out there 100% because duhh – rejection!! I did muster up the courage to share this with some of my work peeps and I was shocked by how many people were rooting for me. My long-winded point is that you should share your passions, you might be surprised by the support you receive. Let your freak flag, fly!!

What are some of the biggest life lessons that you have learned so far?  Let me know!

Until next time, my lovelies!

Simone

Dirty 30 Birthday Dinner + Pablo Y Pablo Restaurant Review

If you follow me on IG, you know that I turned 30 on Monday. Welp, I am officially 30. I’m in a whole new decade, y’all! I can’t believe that I have bid adieu to my 20’s and I am walking into my 30’s like heeyyyyyy! I had some mixed feelings about turning 30, which we can discuss in another post. I will be following up this week with some sentimental things I have learned – so don’t you worry!

For my birthday this year, we decided to be thrifty-ish and pick up a gift card from Costco. They sell these great restaurant group gift cards where you can get $100 in gift cards for $80. $20 off? Yes please!

We decided to try out a new restaurant in the area, Pablo Y Pablo. It is nestled in the trendy area of Wallingford, Seattle. We even got my sister (affectionally known by Gia as Titi) to watch Gia for the night. We had the whole night to enjoy some adult time!

The restaurant was GORGEOUS! The restaurant boasted a gorgeous sprawling patio and a modern, yet comfy interior. I did not get a change to take a photo of the outside, but I did convince my boo to take 50 pictures against the side of the wall. Blogger friends, you KNOW the struggle. He was so patient with me, here is the one I liked best 😉

I look pretty cute for 30!

First, we had to start off with some dranks. I love some smooth and tart margs, so I started my journey to 30 with a strawberry basil margarita. YOU GUYS, BEST DECISION EVER. The strawberry was not overpoweringly sweet and the basil did a great job of balancing the tart flavor. I may have had 2 of them. It was my birthday, I swear I’m not a lush! Okay, I’m a lush. Richard had a Paloma, but I think he liked my drink better haha.

They don’t get much prettier than this!

Soon after we got our drinks, we received our appetizers. Richard saw halibut ceviche on the menu and was like “you already know what time it is”. It was sooooo good. Tender fish and super fresh ingredients. Served with homemade tortillas chips and filled with cucumbers and fresh red onions – it was perfect to start the meal. We also noshed on some guacamole (too many jalapeños for my liking) and more drinks. We were so excited that we could started nibbling before a photo! Big blogging no-no!

We finished up our apps and then anxiously awaited for our main course, some gourmet tacos. Pablo y Pablo’s menu focused on delicious and approachable tacos. They were categorized in 3 ways: land, sea, and baller. Obviously, I wanted all of the baller tacos! We agreed on softshell crab (baller), braised chicken (land), shrimp (sea), duck carnitas (land), pork belly banh mi (land) and a veggie taco with sweet potatoes and cabbage.

My favorites were the softshell crab and the veggie taco. Each taco had its own special set of unique ingredients. I was floored by the quality and sheer yumminess of each taco. I really think you could order any taco at this place and be impressed.

Pablo Y Pablo Tacos

Post tacos, we decided to indulge in some hot and flaky churros y chocolate. I am not usually a churro fan, but these ones had me shook. I feel like churros (Costco, I am talkin’ about you) are usually stale tasting or just are too sugary. Not these churros though. They were so fresh and very lightly sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. Pure prefection. I also failed to get a photo of these because we ate them too fast. Dang.

The Ratings:

Ambience: 10/10 – Beautiful setting with modern and warm decor.
Drinks: 9/10 – My strawberry basil margarita was pureed heaven, but my blood organge margarita left something to be desired.
Food: 9/10 – Everything was fab. It is just hard to give 10/10!! I feel like 10/10 is what you dream about.
Service: 8/10 – As I mentioned before, it may have been slightly under-staffed because we had a hard time finding our server at times.
Crowd: 10/10 – Diverse upper 20’s semi-hipster crowd. Not too busy for a Saturday night. There was no wait either!

Overall, I would rate this restaurant 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5/10. They lost a point because our server was hard to find a few times. I definitely recommend trying this place out and ordering some baller tacos! It is the perfect spot for date night or ladies night out.

Hope you are blessed with some tacos in your life soon!

Simone

Tutorial: The Perfect 3 Minute Bun

I don’t know about you, but I typically have about 10 minutes or less to look like a supermodel functioning human every morning. That leaves very few options to look presentable while saving time. Enter the 3 minute bun! I style my hair in some sort of bun for about 3 days or more per week. I find it to be one of the easiest and most protective styles when I want to be lazy or stretch out my wash days.

I wore this bun for a special date night with my fiancé and I was digging the ballerina/Riri vibes I was serving. Here is exactly how I get my hair in a Rihanna worthy bun!

1) Mist hair with water bottle

I used my FAVORITE spray bottle from Amazon to mist my hair around the perimeter of my head. I made sure not to completely saturate my hair. You do not need to have hair that is dripping wet!

2) Apply Passionfruit Curl Paste

After misting my hair up real good, I added some Passionfruit Curl Paste from Curls. I bought this with the intention of using it to lay my crazy curly edges. I learned that it did NOT tame my loco edges, but it does a great job of smoothing my hair down for a bun. I applied the paste all around the perimeter of my head.

3) Smooth hair and brush hair into a ponytail

I used a boar bristle brush and smoothed my hair up into a ponytail. I wrapped the hair tie around my hair twice and then on the third time, gathered my hair into a bun. I added a few bobbies and voila – near perfect bun! This step sometimes takes the most time to “finesse” because the bun is all about the shape. I like a very FULL bun, but it can look cute if it is a small bun as well.

4) Add baby hairs and smooth edges

This is the step that takes you from cute to cayuuutee! You know, when you catch your reflection in the mirror and do a double take!? Yes, that is the look. I used my good old reliable yellow Gorilla Snot Gel. I was very skeptical about this stuff, but I have to say that I worship this stuff. It is so sooo amazing. I smoothed my edges and added some pretty lil baby hairs to top my look off.

So there you have it – the easiest and most chic hairstyle for natural hair! If you would like to see the complete tutorial, check out the video below on YouTube!

Thanks for learning about my easy breezy hairstyle!

Summer Fashion Trend: Loafers

Loafers are my jam. I put them on and I feel like I can jump on a sailboat or into a boozy girls’s brunch. I am more likely to go take my daughter to the playground with them, but that’s another story. Loafers have been a big trend for the past few seasons and I am loving how you can add a masculine touch to a floral dress or a sleek vibe to some distressed denim. You can get so many cute ones for under $50 per pair!

I just had to round up my favorite spring/summer loafers and share them here! I am sharing these out of the goodness of my own heart, there are no affiliate links. I will always disclose if I am making a few cents off your purchase!

#1 – Black Studded Loafers

Black JustFab Loafers

These are easily my MOST worn shoe this spring/summer. They are sooo comfy and a steal at under $50 (for JustFab members). JustFab is truly a hit or miss because around 60% of the time I end up returning the orders due to lack of quality. These black loafers were one of my wins. They are faux-leather for the vegan chicas and they are actually very durable and comfortable. It makes me want to order more shoes – I see you, JustFab!

Outfit Ideas:

  • Blush pink skinny jeans + white t-shirt
  • Red swing dress
  • Silk top + ripped hem jeans

#2 – Rose Gold Pointed Loafers.

I snagged these up from Forever21 a few years ago and I still get compliments on them whenever I wear them. I can’t find the exact ones pictured above, so I found a similar pair from GAP here. Hurry and grab them – GAP is doing 40% off their whole online store! The rose gold color classes up a boring outfit.

Outfit ideas:

  • Distressed jeans + white peasant top
  • Skinny trousers + leather jacket and band tee

#3 – Silver Loafers

Blame it on my confidence or blame on the tassel switch – these shoes got me drippin’ in finesse. LOL! But really – whenever I wear these, I get a ton of compliments. They are a bit flashy, but I love being a little extra at times. I bought these from JustFab last spring and they are no longer being sold, but I linked some here from JustFab that are similar.

Outfit ideas:

  • T-shirt dress + denim jacket
  • White midi shorts + nautical t-shirt

I hope you enjoyed my favorite pairs of loafers and that you hop on the loafer bandwagon. I wear these shoes 3-4 times a week, so you know I am not messing around! Leave a comment below if you have a pair of loafers that you cannot live without.

Until next time, my golden girls!

10 Cheap or Free Ways To Practice Self-Care

Self-care is a trending topic these days. Sometimes it means getting a massage at a fancy spa or maxing out your credit card at Nordstroms. Just kidding, please don’t do that! Not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on pricey spa treatments or expensive lunch with your main squad.

As a budget-conscious mom, I love to pamper and spoil myself. The only difference is that I don’t spend hundreds of dollars to take care of myself. It can be as simple as hiding setting at timer for 30 minutes to catch up on my magazines or getting my mom to watch my daughter, so I can sleep in and catch up on my YouTube videos. Self-care can also be taking the night off of “momming” and having a girls night in with a bottle of good ol’ Malbec.

In the spirit of being a budget-friendly blog, I wanted to share my favorite free/cheap ways that you can get a little you-time and reconnect with the fabulous woman inside!

  1. Meditation App – Wake up 30 minutes early (I know, I know – it’s tough!). Download a meditation app (Headspace is one of my favorites). Follow the guided meditation and try to let everything go and reconnect with some inner peace. Don’t let the clutter in your mind prevent your happiness!
  2. Schedule 30-60 minutes alone to indulge in guilty pleasure – Okay this one can be difficult, especially if you are a single parent or student! Grab your fave magazine (I am currently loving Health Magazine and Good Housekeeping) or indulge in your favorite trash TV (ummm, Vanderpump Rules anyone!?) and just veg the heck out for a little stretch. Trust me, your body and mind will thank you.
  3. Read a great book – OverDrive App – I love to read. Gimme a nice juicy biography or a spiritual awakening guide, or even a medieval fantasy. I will devour that sucker. One of my favorite cheapie ways to have fun is to find a book on my OverDrive library app and spend an hour or two reading. The OverDrive App connects with your local library and you can check out books for 21 days per book! I read every weekday while bussing to work and I cherish that alone time SO MUCH. It really recharges my soul.
  4. Sheet mask and glass of wine – Never underestimate the power of a sheet mask y’all! Clean your room and apply that sheet mask, then pretend like your life is together. It works, I tell ya. Top it off with a glass of wine and you have a perfect night in.
  5. Binge Watch Some YT or Trash Television – Never ever underestimate the power of a good Real Housewives of Atlanta binge with a side of cheese puffs organic kale chips. While I don’t suggest completely numbing your mind for a whole day, sometimes an hour of a guilty pleasure can really be exactly what you need.
  6. Take a walk or do a 20 minute HIIT workout – I am addicted to the Pop Sugar Fitness app and I love the way they make it easy to find simple and energizing HIIT workouts.
  7. Stop complaining for a week – On the real tip, I did this for a week and it changed the way I look at both negative self-talk and my outlook on life. I found myself monitor some super negative comments that really were not healthy. It made me so much more self-aware of the toxic thoughts that can sometimes put you in a nasty place and to be more positive and grateful.
  8. Gratitude Log – Well since was are talking about being grateful, it can be refreshing to start writing down the things you are thankful for – especially if you are feeling warn down or overwhelmed with life.
  9. Paint your nails – I mean if you got some coins, then you can even have someone else them for you. You get the best of both worlds, some time away from your kids and pretty new nails. But if you are a peasant budget-gal like me, you use a fancy UV gel lamp so you can save that money!
  10. Schedule a massage (with a groupon) – So my ULTIMATE indulgence for self-care is a deep-swedish-thai-strong-hands massage. Aka I pay someone and they attack the knots in my back for 90 minutes. A professional massage will change your LIFE. TRUST.

I hope these 10 free/low cost ways to practice self-care help you recharge and feel just a tiny bit happier.

Stay golden, mamas!

Simone

2 Year Mom Celebration: Most Important Lessons I’ve Learned

I can’t believe that I have been a mom for 2 whole years! My little one turned 2 at the beginning of May this year and I am so happy. There were definitely times that I did not think that I would make it through. From cracked nipples to sleep training, this has been the craziest and most rewarding experience ever. I wanted to roundup the most important things that I have learned in the past 2 years.

You can parent on YOUR terms

It is really scary being a first time parent. Absolutely terrifying, to be honest. While I struggled with finding the answers on common motherhood questions, I also realized that everyone has an opinion. One mom recommends the Ferber sleep-training method, while the other person recommends co-sleeping until 4 years old. People have differences in opinion and that is okay.

The most important thing is to remember that ultimately YOU are the parent and make the best choice based on what you feel is best. If you really do not like the advice you are given, you can just nod and say “thanks for the advice” and keep it pushin’. Most people just mean well and want to help new moms out, but it can get annooyyyinnnggg!

Date night is NECESSARY

Date nights can save your relationship. I repeat, date nights can save your relationship. Okay sooo a truly damaged relationship probably needs a touch more than a few date nights to get things back on track. But it you are just feeling disconnected from your partner/husband/wife – you probably just need a night AWAY from the kiddo and need some adult time.

My fiancé have definitely had some pretty low points during these last two years because I felt like our connection had changed. Luckily my parents live less than 30 minutes away for the babysitting connect – so we were able to strengthen our connection and date each other again. We are so fortunate go on 1-2 dates per month (Gia stays at their house over night) and I really feel like this has rebuilt our relationship and made it even more solid.

Communicate with your partner

After date night, the next most important thing I learned through this whole parenting ride is that you MUST communicate with your partner. Unless they have given birth before, they are unlikely to understand why you sob each time a gum commercial comes on you insist on going to Target at 11pm for the “right” kind of wipes for the baby. You need to give your partner a glimpse into your world and explain that you need extra help. Try to assess what you need and then work on asking for it.

I really struggled with anxiety and post-partum depression for the last 2 years and it took a lot for me to open to my partner and explain how I was feeling. Finally, I have been able to keep things in check through therapy, excercise and following my passions in life. Massage can do wonders too!

Find Mommy friends or a community

Mommy friends are a gift from God. It can be SO HARD to make friends in general – let alone with kids. There are a ton of resources like Facebook Mom groups and PEPS groups to help connect you with other cool moms in your neighborhood.

While I was the first one in my friend group to have a baby – I was happy that some of my friends had a sip of the pregnancy water and now they have kids as well! I have a few friends that I can text and discuss parenting struggles over a glass or Rosé! They understand that if nap time goes awry then the whole day can go downhill. They FEEL you when you tell them breastfeeding has sucked away your soul. Go – find these ladies and laugh or cry it all out.

Don’t lose your essence! Reconnect with yourself

You guys – I STRUGGLED these first few years as a mom. My identity felt like it did a complete 180 because being a mom took up so much of my time. Before being a mom, I was a fabulous bad bitch. I will not lie. I had cute clothes, bomb makeup looks and all the time in the world. I suddenly was thrust into motherhood and all the things that had previously defined me had disappeared. I traded in my hours in front of the mirror for pumping every three hours and timing naps with grocery shopping. My world had flipped upside down and I had to do some soul searchin’ to find Simone again. I realized that I now define myself as a creative person that loves to develop content and connect with other people by chatting and sharing stories. I value time with my loved ones more than time in front of the mirror, but I can still appreciate a life-changing lipstick!

My long-winded point is that being a mother changes you and the most important part is have your identity outside of being a mother. Are you a great friend, entrepreneur, scientist, artist, blogger, fashion stylist or something else? Keep doing that thing that makes you tick and don’t let motherhood be a hinderance, let it be to REASON that you go even harder with your passion.

Self-care is key

In order to go “hard in da paint” as the basketball players say, and follow your passion – you also need to take care of you, boo! This means that if you need a break, take a break. Spend your night watching the Real Housewives of Potomac and yell at the TV when Karen lies again. Your laundry can wait, your mental state cannot!

If you are a former glamour girl like myself, self-care often means to take a little more time in my appearance. Painting my nails or getting an extra 15 minutes to do a full beat-down on my face can make a world of difference. Don’t underestimate the power of exercise either! Things tend to shift around a little post-baby and I always have felt better when I have some sort of exercise routine going on.

Girls night out needs to happen

Like I mentioned earlier, find some mom friends. If you can’t find any mom friends, find some other old friends and go grab dinner. It will give you an excuse to laugh and reconnect with people that you don’t get to see very often.

I always feel recharged and happier after I see my girlfriends. My DREAM is to have a tropical girls vacation in the next few years where we can have time to miss our kids BUT also live our best lives in vacay mode. Doesn’t that sound like goals??

Breast feeding is really effing hard

Yoooo breastfeeding is a beast. Like a beeeaaasstt. Everyone warned me about childbirth and how loco it is. They did not even mention how hard breastfeeding is. I had cracked nipples, baby had a tongue tie and I had low supply issues. I felt like no one pulled me aside and said “hey girl, be warned about breastfeeding”! Side eye. There are many avenues for support in this arena, so I suggest getting into a Mom FB group or personal support group because there are a LOT of things that are not covered in birthing/after care class.

Spend some time alone

This obviously ties in with self-care, but I found that I was the best mom I could be after spending some time alone. Being alone gives you time to think and appreciate where you are presently in life. It can get so crazy that I literally have to put “alone time” on my calendar to make sure that I actually spend the time alone. I usually spend my happy and peaceful alone time reading or watching YT videos. I actually cherish the time when my fiancé goes out with his friends for the night. Get you some alone time, it is the key for being a well-balanced mama.

Spend the moment enjoying instead of lamenting or wishing for the next stage

This is the last lesson I have learned: enjoy every moment! I know, I know it sounds cliché, but I wish I could bottle every single moment of Gia being a baby. They grow independent soooo quickly and it is so tempting to wish you were on the “next stage” instead of enjoying the stage that you are at. Cherish every single second because you never know when it will be your last. I lost my grandmother this year and literally she was there one minute and the next minute she was gone. Put your phone done, pay attention to all the awe-inpsiring things that your baby does and be thankful for every moment you can spend with them.

I hope you enjoyed some of the biggest lessons that I have learned during my first two years as a mother. I poured a bit of my heart and soul into this personal post which is pretty scary for me.

Please share some of your most important lessons below!

Natural Hair: How to Achieve The Perfect Braid Out

Do you ever have try style that looks so good, and takes SO little time and effort? Well that is this wavy hair right here!! Some of you may be familiar with “braid-outs” aka where you throw your hair in 2 braids and pray for the best.

I could not get the hang of this for YEARS. Fast forward to about 2 months ago when I found my favorite hair product at the moment, the Design Essentials Curl Enhancing Mousse. This ish right here – it will change your life, if you have curly hair. I put my hair in two french braids around 7pm with some mousse, then woke up at 6am and took them down. And voila! I had the perfect defined waves.

Here is exactly how I achieved this look:

  1. Detangle hair and part down the middle. This style can be done on wet or dry hair. Dry hair will give you more volume and wet hair will give you more definition.
  2. If hair is dry, dampen with water so it is damp, but not soaking. If it is wet, skip this step, obvi!
  3. Apply a setting mousse all over damp or wet hair. This is my FAVORITE setting mousse ever. It is sooo moisturizing and leaves a great sheen.
  4. Cornrow or dutch braid each side of your hair into two plaits OR you can section hair in up to 8 braids for a more defined look.
  5. Go to sleep, girl!!! I suggest wrapping your hair in a silk or satin scarf before going to bed to prevent frizz and fly-aways.
  6. After letting the braids “marinate” for 8 hours or more (add more time if your hair is high porosity), it’s time to take those puppies down.
  7. Coat fingers with light oil (jojoba is my favorite) and slowly start to take down braids
  8. Shake out hair and fluff with an afro pick or wide tooth comb.

Seattle Restaurant Week: 5 Restaurants Perfect for Mama’s Night Out

It is no secret. I LOVE to eat. If you have read any of my other previous posts, you will know exactly what I am talking about. I also love a great deal. Cue Seattle Restaurant Week!

If you have been living under a rock or in a rural part of the US, you may have not heard about Restaurant Week. During this glorious time, local restaurants offer a discounted pre-fixe 3 course menu for dinner ($35). Some restaurants also offer a 3 course lunch ($18).

You can find the menu for each restaurant here. The best part is looking at all the menus and deciding where to go.

Here in Seattle, we have restaurant week for a total of 4 weeks. 2 weeks in April and 2 weeks in September. Perfect time to grab a girlfriend, husband, wife or parent and get to grubbin’!

#1 – Red Sage and Cedar

My fiancé and I love any excuse to try new restaurants, so we just LIVE for restaurant week. We decided to opt for mid-week lunch this time around. We chose a spot in the heart Pike Place Market called Red Sage and Cedar.

Channeling my inner Real Housewife

Their menu looked off the heezy with promises of a duck slider, fish and chips and carrot cake. For lunch!! The food did not disappoint. I wanted to eat 10 duck sliders (they had goat cheese on them. ‘Nuff said) and the fish and chips were crispy and light at the same time.

Why you should go: Great ambience, fast service, approachable comfort food with experimental vibes.

Also, check out the IG-worthy scenery here!

Look at those vines!

#2 – Daniel’s Broiler (Leschi)

Richard took me here for my birthday a few years ago and we had the trifecta of excellence: food, water view, impeccable service.

On their pre-fixe menu, you can get a 3 course meal with a filet mignon for $35. You just cannot beat that! Their food is steakhouse decadence and it is a nice place, so prepare to dress for the occasion.

#3 –  Lecosho

Oh mannnn, I love this place. I used to work a block away and this was my go-to Happy Hour and lunch spot. They make their own house-made soups daily and the food is SO delish.

This place is pretty reasonably priced normally, but restaurant week is a fun excuse to go and get an even better value! They have a Sockeye salmon on their menu that looks diivviinnne hunny.

#4 – Poppy

Poppy is nested in the bustling edge of Capitol Hill and it promises adventurous new tasting experiences. Be prepared to make a reservation well ahead of time, it will be a loonngg wait otherwise.

They also have a lot of options for vegetarians, vegans and dietary restrictions.

The menu is mouthwatering – I don’t think I could turn down lemongrass and lime beef! Sign me up for that!

#5 – Tavolata

Light the candles, put on that sexy dress, you are going out tonight mama! This place is both delish and romantic. I dig the ambiance and the rich Italian cuisine that they serve. The pasta is handmade and will make you re-think wearing skinny jeans, but will make you so so happy that you said yes to carbs.

Tavolata’s menu boasts over 22 options that will all make you ditch your keto diet for a day and get your paws on some pasta and burrata!

I hope you all get a chance to experience Restaurant Week in Seattle! These restaurants that I mentioned are perfect for girls night, date night, or just a fun night out solo. Let me know below if there are any other restaurants that I have missed or that deserve an honorable mention.

Until next time, mamas!

5 Things You Need to Know: Cherry Blossoms At University of Washington

One of my Seattle bucket list items has always been to go see the cherry blossoms at full bloom at the University of Washington. Even though it is my alma mater (Go Dawgs!), I actually had never seen them in full bloom. Spring break always fell around the time of their bloom, so I was usually not on campus during that time.

The stars aligned and I was able to make a quick trip with my coworker-friend to the blossoms. I wanted to do a mini-photo shoot to get a new headshot. Mission accomplished. Turned out good, yeah?

Not too bad, eh?

I wanted to leave some things you should know, just in case you ever decide to visit the magnificent fantastic beauty of the cherry blossoms during their full bloom.

  1. The cherry blossoms have a pretty cool history. 34 trees were a gift from Tokyo’s mayor in 1912 to symbolize the friendship between Japan and the U.S.. The majority of the trees were planted at Seattle’s Washington Park Arboretum, but then they got moved to the best school in the West – UW.
  2. It will be VERY crowded. Prepare for minimal parking and TONS of tourists lining up to see the blooms. The whole courtyard was swarming, ya know? It is definitely a fun and kid-friendly activity if you want to bring your little ones!
  3. Most likely will be cold AF. Prepare yourself, winter is coming here. Seattle is cold, y’all. Even when the calendar is technically spring, the weather is still winter-esque. Leave the spring sundress and bring a coat and umbrella because it could turn rainy at the drop of a hat.
  4. Come prepared with a fully charged camera or phone. Charge that thing up, bih. Because of the vast amount of people, you may be there for a while trying to get the perfect shot. People kept on jumping in front of my shots. Not cool, man. Not cool. I brought my DSLR and my Iphone for a mini-shoot and I was so happy I charged my camera beforehand. Check out one of my favorite shots below. Shoutout to my photographer!!!

Taken on my iPhone 8 plus!
  5. Look for parking off campus. There are multiple parking lots on the UW campus, but the best bet for parking is on the streets adjacent to the campus. Then you can wander off to get some delicious grub in the U District. There are so many good places to eat there because of the heavy international population on campus. Go try out the Salvadorian pupusas and tell me that they are not the tastiest things ever!

Have you ever visited the cherry blossoms at UW? Did you love it? Comment below!
